Louis Vuitton began replacing traditional date codes with embedded NFC (Near Field Communication) chips on many products manufactured from around 2021 onward.
Important Note
The presence—or absence—of an NFC chip should never be used as the sole indicator of authenticity. Counterfeit manufacturers have begun embedding NFC chips in fake bags, while some genuine Louis Vuitton items may have defective chips that cannot be detected. Our authentication process also considers the bag’s materials, craftsmanship, construction, stamps, and hardware in addition to any embedded technology.
How to Detect an NFC Chip
You smartphone must have NFC capability. Please download free app called NFC Tools on Android or iPhone. Depending on the model, the chip may be embedded inside:
- Rectangular leather patch with brand stamp (most common)
- The leather trim
- The interior lining
- An interior pocket panel
- A side panel
- The base of the bag
The location varies by model and production batch, so there is no single position that applies to every Louis Vuitton item. To locate the NFC chip, slowly move your phone over the entire bag or wallet, scanning both the inside and outside until all areas have been checked. When your phone detects the NFC chip, take a screenshot of the result and submit it along with photos of your item.
